Travis d’Arnaud will reportedly have his right hand in a splint for the next three weeks after suffering a metacarpal fracture Sunday when he was hit by a pitch.
ESPN reported that the New York Mets catcher will miss a minimum of three weeks. D’Arnaud will be able to resume baseball activities after the fracture heals and is pain-free. The injury happened the same game during which the 26-year-old had two hits in one inning. He was off to a red-hot start for the Mets this season, helping New York go on an eight-game winning streak.
D’Arnaud sported a .317 AVG and 10 RBI in the young season. He was trying to prove to the ball club that he belongs as the Mets starting catcher for years to come.
According to the report, D’Arnaud will likely be out until late May. In the meantime, the Mets have called up Kevin Plawecki from Triple-A Las Vegas. Plawecki, 24, is a highly-touted prospect in New York’s farm system. Playing in all levels of the minors, Plawecki has a .292 AVG and is expected to get a lot of playing time along with current replacement Anthony Recker.
