ANALYSIS: After being waived by the Detroit Lions two games into last season, Ty Johnson was picked up by his current team, the New York Jets. In 11 games last year for the Jets, Johnson rushed 54 times for 254 yards and scored one touchdown, averaging a 17% snap share. Those numbers are a bit misleading, though, as the bulk of his productivity came in one game against the Las Vegas Raiders, where he rushed 22 times for 104 yards. That was the only game all season in which he saw a snap share north of 60%.
The issue with rostering Johnson is that the Jets' backfield got more crowded this year. They drafted Michael Carter in the fourth round of this year's draft, and added Tevin Coleman in free agency. La'Mical Perine is also still on the roster. But there is certainly a potential path to touches here given how the preseason went, and the success he saw with the touches given. Ty Johnson received the start in the final preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. Veteran back Tevin Coleman was inactive, so the Jets gave Johnson the bulk of the carries. He rushed 13 times for 53 yards and one touchdown in what ended up being a tie. Johnson also added two receptions for 18 yards through the air.
Johnson is essentially a running back to stash at the end of drafts, as the RB committee approach for the Jets will rotate between several players and it should be interesting to see how it plays out. Chances are that Johnson doesn't have significant fantasy value without injuries to Coleman and/or Carter, but you never know and it doesn't cost much in drafts to find out. He's an RB4/RB5 flier, with some potential upside for more.
