ANALYSIS: Tyler Clippard is now the presumptive closer for the Arizona Diamondbacks now that Brad Ziegler has been dealt to the Boston Red Sox. Chip Hale, the Diamondbacks manager, said that both Tyler Clippard and Daniel Hudson would be in the mix for saves. He then added that Clippard would have been the first option in a save situation because Daniel Hudson was just away from the team on bereavement leave.
Not only does Clippard have more experience than Hudson in closing out games, but he's also been better this season, especially of late. That said it wouldn't surprise me to see Clippard and/or Hudson traded as well. Clippard has a team option for next season, but it's actually pretty cheap and reasonable. Hudson on the other hand is a free agent next season.
While this could mean that Hudson gets a few save chances to help improve his trade value, I still think that Clippard leads the team in saves for the rest of the season and is clearly the best save target to add from the Diamondbacks. If you need help in the saves department and Tyler Clippard is available in your league's free agent pool you should jump right in.
