Justin Verlander is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Sunday, according to the Detroit News.
This is good news for the former Cy Young and MVP winner as he hasn’t thrown a single pitch this season in the MLB as he’s been dealing with a triceps injury.
The Tigers starting pitcher looked "very good" in a 70-pitch simulated game on Tuesday, according to what Detroit manager, Brad Ausmus, told the Detroit News. As long as Verlander feels good on Wednesday, he’ll be good to go for Sunday.
The 32-year-old right-hander was hoping to join the rotation sooner but the Tigers have decided to be cautious with him. There’s a chance that Sunday’s start will be his only one before possibly making his 2015 debut with the Tigers.
Verlander has pitched over 200 innings in eight consecutive seasons now. This season has been a difficult one for him just to get started. He’s been one of the most durable and dependable pitchers in the game, but he’ll have to wait at least a week or so before coming back.
