Justin Verlander will make his season debut on the mound Saturday for the Detroit Tigers against the Cleveland Indians, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The former AL MVP and Cy Young winner has been dealing with a triceps injury that forced him out of Spring Training and caused him to not pitch yet in the MLB this season. Saturday will finally be the day, according to what Tigers manager, Brad Ausmus, told the Free Press.
The 32-year-old struck out nine batters and allowed just one (unearned) run over 5 2/3 innings last weekend in his second rehab start. It was quite a performance just as Detroit will bring him back to the starting rotation.
Hopefully he’s refocused on being one of the top pitchers in the game and rebounding from last season’s down year. The right-hander sported 15-12 record, 4.54 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 159/65 K/BB ratio in 206 innings last season.
