Victor Martinez is expected to rejoin the Detroit Tigers next Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The 1B/DH was originally expected to come back from a knee injury after the all-star break. Those rumors apparently aren’t true as Martinez was cleared to take part in baseball activities with the goal of rejoining the club next week.
The 36-year-old took batting practice at extended spring training on Thursday.
"His physical therapist down there said he's been running extremely well," manager Brad Ausmus told the Detroit Free Press. "And they feel, he feels, based on Victor's feedback, that (this is) as good as (Martinez) has been moving and running."
Last season, the veteran finished second in AL MVP voting with .335 BA, .409 SLG, .974 OPS, 32 HR and 103 RBI. This season hasn’t been quite the same due to the lingering knee injury. In 34 games, Martinez only has one homer to go along 15 RBI and a .216 BA.
