The Detroit Tigers placed Victory Martinez on the 15-day DL with left knee inflammation.
The DH tweaked his knee during Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Martinez, 36, missed three straight games and then had one pinch-hit appearance prior to going 0-for-4 Monday. He missed those games because of an ailing knee.
"From the looks of things, it looks like we're going to have to at least talk about other options," Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus told MLB.com after Monday’s loss.
Less than a day later, they placed the former all-star on the 15-day DL. It will give the slugger more time to rest up and bounce back from a slow start. Martinez has a .216 BA and only one homer. Last season, he had a career best .335 BA, .409 OBP, .565 SLG, .974 OPS, 188 hits, 32 HR and more than 100 RBI.
The Tigers have called up outfielder Tyler Collins to replace him on the active roster.
