ANALYSIS: The Phillies have hit a rough patch of late, but the team's larger performance doesn't reflect the individual effort of Vince Velasquez.  After a middling April that added more fuel to the fire for the argument that Velasquez belongs in the bullpen, the hard-throwing righty has pitched to a 2.14 ERA in his past six starts, striking out 45 batters in 34 innings and adding nearly 10 points to his ground ball rate. That last metric has helped him limit opponents to just one home run in his last four turns.

Velasquez 's volatility turns some people off, and that's completely understandable. But in the off-chance he's figured something out - and his .279 expected wOBA suggests that he might have - the talent here makes the risk worthwhile.
