Edinson Volquez left the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday to travel to the Dominican Republic following his father's death.
The starting pitcher didn’t know of his father’s passing until he came out of Game 1 on Tuesday. Volquez’s family awaited him in the locker room and broke the news. He will be in the DR for the time being and he isn’t scheduled to be on the mound until Game 5 on Sunday.

News broke out that his father had died at 63 after battling heart disease for a few years. The Royals were able to keep the news away from Volquez despite the team, social media and the broadcast aware of what happened. The 32-year-old allowed three runs over six innings and was on the hook for the loss when he was removed. Luckily for him, the Royals came back and won the game in extra innings.
“The whole time I kept thinking, Eddie was out there pitching his tail off,’’ Royals manager Ned Yost said, “and I kept thinking, his dad isn't watching him. His first start in a World Series and his dad isn't watching him.
Yost kept a watchful eye on Volquez throughout the game.
“I was really monitoring him. He was happy, upbeat. He was there talking to all of his friends. Ok, he doesn’t know anything.
