The St. Louis Cardinals activated from the DL on Wednesday and will use the three-time All-Star out of the bullpen for the rest of the year.
Adam Wainwright wasn’t even supposed to return at all this season after he tore his Achilles tendon in his left leg back in April. Luckily for the NL-leading Cardinals, they will get back their best pitcher for another postseason-run. Since he won’t have enough time to rehab to become a starter, the Cards will use the right-hander out of the bullpen.
This won’t be the first time St. Louis uses Wainwright out of the bullpen. The 34-year-old was a rookie in 2006 when he was coming out of the bullpen for 61 games during the regular season. He struck out 15 over 9 2/3 scoreless innings while tallying four saves en route to a Cardinals World Series title during the postseason.
In 2007, he started his MLB career as a starting pitcher. Throughout his 10-year career, Wainwright owns a 121-67 record with a 2.98 ERA. The Cardinals’ bullpen will be that much stronger overnight with the veteran coming relief for the starters.
