Week 24 Buy Candidates

Domingo Santana, OF, Milwaukee Brewers

Many expected a breakout campaign for Santana this year – present company included – but 2016 had been tough sledding for the 23 year old. A shoulder injury cost him three months, and he collected just five hits (four of them singles) in his first 30 trips to the plate after returning. Santana has caught fire of late, though, hitting .387/.424/.774 with four homers, 15 R+RBI, and a stolen base in his last eight games.

Ryon Healy, 3B, Oakland Athletics

Healy struggled after being promoted to the majors, but he’s been quite productive since that initial adjustment period. He’s hit .324/.364/.538 over the last six weeks, with seven home runs and 36 R+RBI. Three of those dingers have come in his last seven contests. Healy hadn’t shown much power in the minors prior to this year, but an adjustment to his swing path has helped him tap into his pop more easily. He has 23 homers this year across three levels, after hitting 26 combined the two years prior in High-A and Double-A.

Luke Weaver, SP, St. Louis Cardinals

Weaver has just one victory in his first six career starts, but that’s mostly due to a lack of run support. The rookie has pitched to a 3.48 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, with 39 strikeouts and just eight walks in 31 innings of work. He next takes on the Giants, who have scored fewer runs than all but three clubs since the All-Star break. You probably want to avoid running Weaver out there for his start next week, since it’s at Coors Field, but he’ll finish the year with quality matchups at home against the Reds and Pirates.

Week 24 Sell Candidates

Josh Donaldson, 3B, Toronto Blue Jays

Donaldson hit three home runs on August 28, and went deep again the next night. Since then, he’s scuffled to the tune of a .154/.313/.179 line and hasn’t recorded a hit in almost two weeks. He’s sat out the last few games and had an MRI on his hip on Wednesday, casting serious doubt on his ability to contribute in the final weeks. Donaldson has been fantastic all season and has a decent chance of repeating as American League MVP, but hip injuries can be devastating to a hitter.

Zack Greinke, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks

Greinke suffered a strained oblique in late June and missed nearly six weeks of action. His owners were undoubtedly hoping he’d return in top form, but that’s been far from the case. The veteran has a hideous 7.23 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in seven starts since coming off the disabled list. Most of the damage came in epic disasters against the Red Sox and Dodgers, but even stripping those games out, Greinke simply hasn’t looked like himself.
