Week 5 Daily Fantasy Football Tournament Stacks

Some weeks go your way, and some weeks don't. For example, if you didn't roster Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and/or wide receiver Julio Jones in your daily fantasy lineups last weekend, well ... it just wasn't your week. Ryan (503 yards, four TDs) and Jones (300 yards, TD) were historically great, and anyone that stacked them almost certainly reaped major benefits.

The goal of this weekly column is to help find the most profitable stacks, while avoiding the duds. Stacking, or pairing multiple players from the same NFL team, is an ideal way to maximize your point production, which is crucial in larger GPP (guaranteed prize pool) tournaments. Let's examine some of the top stacks for Week Five, sorted loosely by salary.

Editor's Note: Be sure to check out FantasyAces DFS contests. New users that sign up on Fantasy Aces and make a $20 deposit will receive RotoBaller's full season NFL Premium Pass for free (including Premium DFS), normally a $59.99 value. High Priced Week 5 DFS Stacks

Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Jordy Nelson vs. New York Giants

The last time we saw Rodgers in action, he was tossing four touchdowns against the Detroit Lions. Two of those were caught by Nelson. After a week off for an early-season bye, the Green Bay duo will be ready to resume its dominance on Sunday night.

The Giants are allowing 262 passing yards per game and are the only team in the NFL without an interception. Rodgers and Nelson should form an elite, albeit expensive, DFS stack this weekend.

Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger and WR Antonio Brown vs. New York Jets

Surprised? Of course not. Roethlisberger-to-Brown is simply the most lethal quarterback-wide receiver duo in the present-day NFL. Neither will come cheap, but as we saw this past Sunday night in a rout of the Kansas City Chiefs, the duo's upside at Heinz Field is staggering.

Roethlisberger has passed for at least 250 yards in each of his four games, and his 11 touchdown passes are tied with Matt Ryan for the league lead. New York ranks 26th in pass defense (285 yards allowed per game) and could be without cornerback Darrelle Revis. Yikes.

Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck and WR T.Y. Hilton vs. Chicago

Luck salvaged an otherwise pedestrian outing last Sunday in London with a massive fourth quarter, but he has yet to approach his Week One output (385 yards, four touchdowns). This might be the week he does, and if that happens, expect Hilton to be a major reason why.

The Colts need a win to keep pace with Houston in the AFC South, so Luck will be throwing early and often. Chicago's defense has played well of late, but it remains beatable. A Luck-Hilton stack should also be lower-owned than both Rodgers-Nelson and Roethlisberger-Brown.

Moderately Priced Week 5 DFS Stacks

New England QB Tom Brady and WR Julian Edelman at Cleveland

He's back! Finally, we can put "Deflategate" to bed for good ... right? Either way, Brady returns from his four-game suspension and gets just about as soft a landing as possible against Cleveland. Sure, the Browns have been competitive lately, but come on.

The safest stack is probably Brady and Edelman, but it wouldn't hurt to sprinkle in Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett and even running back James White. Brady is likely to throw a handful of touchdowns. We just have to figure out which player(s) will be on the receiving end of them.

Philadelphia QB Carson Wentz and WR Jordan Matthews at Detroit

The hype train has left the station and Wentz is driving it, but there's no denying his impressive start. Wentz has tossed five touchdowns in the Eagles' 3-0 start, while playing turnover-free football. Now he returns from his bye week to face the Lions' dreadful defense.

Detroit has allowed 12 passing touchdowns already, second only to Atlanta (13). Look for Wentz to find the end zone at least twice, with Matthews being a primary target. Tight end Zach Ertz, who will return from a rib injury, also stands out as a solid stacking option.

Chicago QB Brian Hoyer and WR Alshon Jeffery at Indianapolis

Jay who? OK, maybe Bears fans haven't completely given up on Jay Cutler (well, maybe some have), but Hoyer is making a real case to remain the starter even when Cutler is healthy. Hoyer has passed for 300-plus yards and two touchdowns in each of his last two games, one of which resulted in the Bears' first win.

Kevin White (leg) was placed on injured reserve this week, while Eddie Royal and tight end Zach Miller are also nursing injuries. Jeffery is the Bears' top weapon, but he also might be their healthiest. This is an intriguing stack against a leaky Colts defense.

Bargain Week 5 DFS Stacks

Denver QB Trevor Siemian and WR Demaryius Thomas vs. Atlanta

Follow the updates out of Denver regarding the quarterback situation this weekend. As of early Friday morning, there was no definitive word, though Siemian made progress on Thursday. Either way, neither Siemian nor rookie Paxton Lynch will break the bank.

Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders both represent solid plays against an Atlanta defense that has allowed a league-worst 13 touchdown passes and 317 yards per game (31st).

Carolina QB Derek Anderson and TE Greg Olsen vs. Tampa Bay

This is also a quarterback situation to monitor closely, but it's one that could leave you in a bind, since the game isn't played until Monday night. Most indications point toward Anderson starting for Cam Newton (concussion), but it's a risky situation.

Olsen, however, is far from risky. In fact, with at least five receptions and 60 yards in all four games this season, he's been one of the safest DFS plays. Expect that to continue against the Buccaneers.
