Week 5 Waiver Wire: Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

Over the course of the season I’ll be giving you two players at second base and shortstop per week who I think can help your team. These players are usually widely available in any format, and should turn nice profits in the weeks to come.

As always, feel free to reach out to me directly @Roto_Dubs with any questions about the middle infield or fantasy baseball in general.

Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple & Android Stores.

Second Base (2B) Waiver Wire Pickups

Brett Lawrie (CWS) - Owned in 42% of Fleaflicker leagues

Lawrie is on an absolute tear at the moment. In his last 15 games, he's hitting .294 (.290 on the season) with seven RBI and 10 runs scored. While he goes down swinging a ton, if you're in a league that doesn't count strikeouts he's been returning some excellent value lately. Lawrie has smashed homers in three straight games and is showing no signs of slowing down at the plate. While you can't expect the homers to keep coming at that rate, 15 is not out of the question for the entire season. He's also got the speed to swipe 10 or more bags, and could be an extremely cheap roto asset if he keeps the batting average above .270.

Martin Prado (MIA) - Owned in 19% of Fleaflicker leagues

Quick, who led the majors in hits last week? Wrong. It was Prado with a whopping 15 hits across 28 at-bats. Those 15 hits were enough to give him the MLB lead in batting average (.410) as he surpassed the cooling-off St. Louis shortstop Aledmys Diaz. Prado has very little pop and he's never been a prolific bast-stealer, but he's going to keep hitting in front of the mighty Giancarlo Stanton, and if he can keep his batting average above .280 he should be a valuable asset in both average and runs scored. As a career .293 hitter this is well within his grasp.

Shortstop (SS) Waiver Wire Pickups

Danny Santana (MIN) - Owned in 2% of Fleaflicker leagues

Since returning from a hamstring injury on April 25th, Santana has been muy caliente. With Byron Buxton demoted due to lack of production, Santana should have the center field gig to himself for the most part. This will most certainly be the case if he continues to swing a hot stick--he's hitting .360 with three runs scored and two stolen bases since his return. The multi-positional elgibility he should soon have is one more positive for him, and it makes him a very nice plug-and-play option in any format.

Ketel Marte (SEA) - Owned in 24% of Fleaflicker leagues

Following a horrendous start to the season, Marte has begun to look more like the multi-talented shortstop prospect that most people drafted him as. In his last 15 games he's hitting .333 with 15 hits and seven runs scored. Marte's main weapon is his speed, and he really hasn't had a chance to utilize it--can't steal bases if you're not on base. As his bat heats up he should be on more regularly and stealing bags early and often. He's a switch-hitter and there is nobody to crowd him out of the spot, so expect the Mariners to be patient with their young shortstop, as you should be.
