Week 6 Buy and Sell for Fantasy Baseball

Good week on the buy side, as Ian Kennedy shut down the Indians and Marcus Semien went deep twice. Not a great showing on the sell half, though, as both Mark Trumbo and Jaime Garcia continued to impress. Still bearish on both long-term, but credit where it’s due.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends. Here are this week’s buy and sell recommendations.

Week 6 Buys

Adam Duvall, OF, Cincinnati Reds

One of the benefits to being a rebuilding team is the ability to take chances on certain guys. Duvall showed plenty of power throughout his minor league tenure, but he was always old for his level. He didn’t have prospect pedigree, or particularly good plate discipline metrics. Recent history is littered with the bones of players like this (whither goest thou, Bryan LaHair?), commonly known as Quad-A types.

But Duvall is making the most of his opportunity so far. While he’s currently running a strikeout rate north of 30 percent, he’s also popped six homers and is hitting the hell out of the ball when he does connect. That’s helped him to a playable .253 average. The projection systems all have him pegged for 20-plus homers ROS, and he’s currently free in 95 percent of Yahoo leagues.

David Price, SP, Boston Red Sox

Okay, so let’s run down the checklist. Low strand rate? Yep, worst in baseball. Inflated BABIP? Uh-huh, fourth-highest. Difference between ERA and FIP? A whopping 3.80, nearly twice as large as the next guy (Adam Wainwright). Strikeouts? Actually up by a significant margin. Open and shut. Well, except for the diminished velocity and the fact that his BABIP isn’t all seeing-eye singles. Price is getting clobbered, and not even a gaudy increase in whiffs has been able to mask that. But there aren’t any other signs of injury, and Price is reportedly ironing out a mechanical issue that might explain his poor results to this point. Buy low while you can, folks.

Week 6 Sells

Michael Brantley, OF, Cleveland Indians

All offseason long, both experts and regular Joes alike touted Brantley as an excellent buy-low opportunity in 2016. I wasn’t so sure, given the severity of his shoulder injury and the fact that shoulder injuries are often difficult to come back from and tend to linger. And wouldn’t you know it, Brantley’s off to a sluggish start and sat out Wednesday’s game with the Astros due to soreness. It’s only been 11 games, and Brantley’s indisputably talented when healthy. But it’s tough to shake the feeling that this might be a lost season for him.

Jose Quintana, SP, Chicago White Sox

Quintana has long been one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball, real or fantasy. He’s doing his best to change that so far, with career best strikeout and walk rates buoying a sexy 1.38 ERA through seven turns. It’s nice to see the guy get some love, but this is a textbook example of a guy playing over his head. Quintana is, by any conceivable measure, the exact same pitcher he’s been the last few years. Plenty good, sure, and there’s value in consistency. He’s not suddenly elite, though. If a rival thinks he might be, by all means make a trade.
