Week 6 Tight Ends - Rankings & Matchups Analysis
My colleagues and I are all equally high on Greg Olsen this week, and it should come as no shock to anyone who's paid attention to the Panthers this year. Olsen has been outstanding, returning WR1 value as the most reliable option in the Carolina passing game. A shootout with New Orleans and the return of Cam Newton should make Olsen the number one tight end yet again--barring a Gronk-ruption.
Or hell, how about another strong Martysaurus Rex outing? I am a firm believer in the fact that two tight ends can thrive in a Tom Bray-led offense, mainly because we've seen it happen before. In 2011 Gronk had his best season ever (90-1,327-17) while the Tight-End-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named posted a terrific year as well (79-910-7). Both of these guys will be TE1s as long as Tom Brady is slinging and Bill Belichick is scheming.
Prior to the Seahawks' bye, Jimmy Graham had posted back-to-back six-catch, 100-yard games. He's looked every bit as effective as he did with Drew Brees back in New Orleans, both in the box score and in the game film. In what should be a high-scoring matchup with the Falcons, Graham has a very real shot at another 100-yard outing.
Julius Thomas was actually off to a really nice start this year before suffering yet another injury, and with him back at full health I like his chances to make an impact in the Jags' matchup with the Bears on Sunday. Thomas is still a huge end zone threat, and the Jaguars seem content to let Bortles continue to sling it around. He can easily return TE1 value this week.
While he doesn't appear on our initial rankings here, Niles Paul makes for a very interesting waiver claim and streamer if (when) Jordan Reed is declared out. In 2014, with Reed out, Paul posted a 39-507-1 line in seven starts. Reed may be considering retirement with his sixth concussion in the mix, and I believe it'll be Paul and not Vernon Davis who picks up any targets that may still fall to the tight end spot in Washington.
