As of this writing I am one-for-two in QB picks for last week. My deeper league pick Michael Vick plays Monday night and I will hopefully remember to update this with his performance.
Alex Smith didn’t kill you, as is his specialty, but I still expected more out of him. Blake Bortles on the other hand delivered in a big way. The Jaguars may have lost but if you chose to stream Bortles you probably won your matchup in Week 5.
For this Week 6 waiver wire article, I will look at two QBs owned in 50 percent or less of Fleaflicker leagues, and another QB owned in 25 percent or less to account for the QB scarcity in 2QB leagues.
Standard League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 6
Blake Bortles (JAX) vs Texans
OWNED IN: 38% of Fleaflicker leagues
Blake Bortles’ ownership is on the rise and with good reason! Bortles has really played quite well this year and Week 5 was the best statistical game of his career. It was just his second 300 yard game and he had never thrown for more than two touchdowns before Week 5 where he managed to throw four scores.
The Texans have really played poor defense all season and just allowed a solid fantasy day from a sickly Matt Hasselbeck. I doubt Bortles throws for four touchdowns again but he is looking better and better. He also has Julius Thomas back to add to an already nice stable of weapons. This is the third straight week Bortles makes the column and I expect him to deliver once again!
Teddy Bridgewater (MIN) vs Chiefs
OWNED IN: 38% of Fleaflicker Leagues
Teddy Bridgewater has honestly been underwhelming this season so it’s no surprise to see his ownership percentage where it is. Yet I felt he played really well against a superb Broncos defense in Week 4. The numbers back it up as no other QB has been able to hit double-digit fantasy points against Denver.
Now coming off his bye (which at the very least is never a bad thing in my mind) he gets a Chiefs defense that has struggled tremendously against quarterbacks this season. In Week 5 the Chiefs had Jay Cutler without his top two WRs and he played very well. I think Bridgewater has a good shot at QB1 numbers here.
Deeper League QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 6
Ryan Fitzpatrick (NYJ) vs Redskins
OWNED IN: 21% of Fleaflicker Leagues
Is Fitz exciting? Not at all. What he does bring to the table is one of the better WR duos in the league in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. That has allowed Fitz to avoid an awful fantasy day all season and that should continue here.
Washington has surprised me by looking fairly competent on defense but I would really be surprised if they can stop Marshall and Decker. Fitz has thrown at least one interception in every game so far and that will probably continue. He has also thrown for two touchdowns in three of four games. I expect something along the lines of 250 yards and 2 TDs to 1 INT. That is a very passable day if you need it.
