Week 7 Tight End (TE) Rankings Analysis
By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)
I am buying too hard into one single game by having Julius Thomas at TE4 this week? I don’t think so. We know he is an elite touchdown threat. The 13 targets was an incredibly promising sign that he will be a big part of this offense going forward. For comparison, he never had more than 8 targets with Denver last year. There is quite a bit of wiggle room for Thomas’s targets to dip a bit and still be a great play. I’m a believer.
Antonio Gates looks increasingly doubtful and that’s a shame. I originally had him at TE2 but I have moved him down to TE6. If he is out, that is great news for Ladarius Green. I have Green at TE13 already but he would jump into my top ten if he is the sole tight end. The Raiders have really struggled against tight ends all year and it’s hard to see that not continuing here.
I am especially low on Greg Olsen against the Eagles. The Eagles have been fantastic against tight ends in the Chip Kelly era. Here is a fun stat: Tight ends have scored 5 touchdowns against the Eagles since Chip Kelly has taken over. That is over a span of 39 games, and three of those touchdowns came in Chip’s first season. That means just two scores over the past 22 games. Olsen might be able to rack up a bunch of yards but the Eagles are allowing the 2nd fewest points to TEs so I have a hard time seeing that too. Don’t be shocked if it’s a quiet game for Olsen.
It looks like Jordan Reed will return this week. He should continue where he left off, receiving plenty of targets. In four games Reed had 8 or more standard points and 14+ PPR points in three of them. He is a low-end TE1 in standard but probably top ten in PPR.
