The Washington Nationals placed Jayson Werth on the 15-day DL with a left wrist contusion and called up Wilmer Dilfo from Double-A Harrisburg, according to MLB.com.
Werth’s DL stint is retroactive for May 16. The veteran outfielder suffered the injury after being drilled by a pitch on Friday. While Werth sits, in comes Dilfo to potentially transition from shortstop to the outfielder.
The 23-year-old prospect has delivered in the minors and is off to a great start this season with both Class-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg. Dilfo has a .315 BA with three homers and 18 RBI.
Last year, Dilfo had a .315 BA with 14 home runs, 90 RBIs, 37 walks and 91 runs scored in 136 games for Class-A Hagerstown.
This will be Werth’s second stint on the DL this season. An MRI found there was no fracture or ligament damage, so the hope is he won’t be out for too long.
Michael Taylor figures to also get a chance at more playing time in Werth’s absence.
