Evan Gattis will be sidelined four to six weeks after having hernia surgery. This means a couple of things for the fantasy world. If the recovery goes as planned, Gattis will be able to get some work in before opening against the New York Yankees in early April, and will very well remain a suitable fantasy option in the home run and RBI departments. Gattis, like other Astros, reached careers highs in 2015, slugging 27 goners and driving in 88 ribbies. Last season marked the third straight season that Gattis hit over 20 home runs, despite playing in only 105 and 108 games in his first two with Atlanta. Gattis is not much of a threat elsewhere but still cracks the top five of fantasy designated hitters.
If Gattis faces any setbacks, Luis Valbuena, Marwin Gonzalez, and Jonathan Singleton all have a chance to step in as Houston’s every DH. Much more about the three will be discussed in separate articles, but since Valbuena and Gonzalez have established themselves at multiple positions where the Astros don’t have a definitive starter yet, my guess is that Singleton could be given the nod at DH. Time will tell.
