It would be nice if every Yankees pitcher didn’t have some type of concern attached to their name. Michael Pineda is certainly one of them, as he’s been plagued by injuries year after year. Big Mike pitched well in April and May of 2015, posting a 6-2 record and a 3.37 ERA, and although struggled in June, he was averaging almost five starts a month heading into August. But Pineda injured his forearm right before August invited itself to summer, missing all but one start that month. Despite a few impressive appearances after returning from the DL, Pineda wasn’t the same.
Like with all injury-prone players, the question is can he stay healthy for an entire season? Yankees fans and potential fantasy owners are hoping he can return to 2014-form (minus another injury) where he posted a 1.87 ERA in 13 starts. Big Mike's upside is his potential, not exactly comforting, but he is still ranked in the top 40 of starting pitchers. The Yankees are expecting big things from him in 2016, but what else are they supposed to say about their second or third starter? We can expect inconsistent moments of brilliance, hopefully enough to boost his value as a third or fourth pitcher selected in deeper league drafts.
