Wil Myers Overdue For a Breakout Season

Remember when Wil Myers won the American League Rookie of the Year Award back in 2013? Really, we swear he did. What began as a career seemingly destined for All-Star nods and other superlatives has sputtered for two years due to injuries and inconsistency. Myers was limited to 60 games in his debut season with the San Diego Padres last year, finishing with just eight home runs and 29 RBIs. Wrist injuries have slowed Myers over the past two seasons, but if he is finally healthy, there's cautious reason for optimism in 2016.

Myers was once one of Baseball America's top five prospects, and he showed serious power in the minors. In 2012 he hit a combined 37 home runs over 134 games in Double-A and Triple-A. He's only four years removed from that type of production and is still just 25 years old. Myers should open the season as the Padres' starting first baseman, a role that will give him ample opportunity to hit in the heart of an order that no longer has Justin Upton. Myers is an ideal buy-low option in the later rounds of drafts.
