It has been a tumultuous sixteen months for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, dating back to the 2021 NFL draft when the 49ers went all-in to draft quarterback Trey Lance third overall.
After besting the rookie in training camp last year and holding him off all season, it appears the end of the Garoppolo era in San Francisco has arrived. The 49ers made a concerted effort to trade him this offseason, but unfortunately, his shoulder injury scared any potential suitors away.
Now that Garoppolo is reported to be healthy, the question remains what the 49ers will do with him. Will he be cut, will he be traded, and if so, when? Find out the details below.

What Are Jimmy Garoppolo's Contract Details?
Garoppolo Contract Details
Category | Details |
Cap Hit For 49ers | $26.95 million |
Dead Cap Hit | $1.4 million |
Cap Hit For New Team | $25 million |
The cap hit for the 49ers ($26.95 million) is the amount they are due to pay Garoppolo for this season if he is still on their active roster to start the year, which is primarily why they have been actively seeking a trade.
The dead cap hit ($1.4 million) is the remaining amount they would owe if they were to cut him before Week 1, which is why they recently stated that he would be cut from the roster if he cannot be traded.
The cap hit for a new team if he was traded ($25 million) is important because his new team would need to have enough cap space available to absorb this amount.
Which Teams Are Potential Trade Partners For Jimmy Garoppolo?
When the offseason began, nearly a third of the NFL franchises were seeking a quarterback, and, however, currently, only the Seahawks are a realistic trade partner.
Although this would be an in-division trade, which historically is uncommon, it would enable the 49ers to ensure they receive some compensation for Garoppolo.
The Seahawks would improve their roster without competing on the open market for Garoppolo, where teams like Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, or the New York Giants could become interested.
The Seahawks currently have just under $14 million in cap space, meaning they do not have room to acquire Garoppolo. However, with the right incentives, such as a draft pick, the 49ers may agree to retain a portion of their salary to make this deal happen.
We saw this recently in the Baker Mayfield trade, making this a plausible agreement for both sides.
Should I Draft Jimmy Garoppolo in 2022 Fantasy Football?
It is in the best interest of both teams to execute this trade, even though it would require compromise from both sides.
You can expect this trade to occur before Week 1, likely by the end of August, making Garoppolo the Seahawks' starter for Week 1.
The 30-year-old would become a borderline QB2 in fantasy if traded to Seattle and mainly an option in two-QB or Superflex league formats.
Garoppolo would have top-tier pass-catching options in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, but moving to a run-first offense puts him in the 25-28 range right around where Zach Wilson, Marcus Mariota, and Jameis Winston are being drafted.
