ANALYSIS: When a shortstop hits 20 home runs with a .254/.317/.418 slash line, it used to put them into consideration for drafting in all fantasy leagues. Willy Adames did just that last season yet wasn't drafted much heading into 2020 and is still under rostered. That's in large part due to the glut of excellent shortstops available in fantasy the last few years but Adames has improved again this year yet is still under rostered. Through 31 games, Adames has three homers, one stolen base, ten RBI and 19 runs scored (which is tied-7th best among all MLB shortstops).
Adames has been inching his way up the batting order after starting the year hitting seventh or eighth, he's hit fourth or fifth in three of his last five starts and has put together a .286/.369/.510 slash line, all of which are career highs. His .417 BABIP does suggest regression is coming but he's ranked in the 74th percentile in Exit Velocity, 85th percentile in hard-hit rate and 77th percentile in sprint speed (according to statcast) so his numbers aren't all down to good luck. Adames does have an alarmingly high 31.5% K% this year but the Rays rank third in the MLB for runs scored (167 runs in 33 games) so Adames should continue to rack up the counting stats and is contributing across all five categories so should be rostered more than he currently is for a middle infield spot in 12+ team leagues.
