The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without Yasiel Puig as they have placed the all-star on the 15-day DL, retroactive to April 25 thanks to a left hamstring strain.
After an 0-for-2 performance on Friday, the 24-year-old outfielder sat out Saturday’s game and officially went on the DL Sunday. Puig has missed six games already in the young season.
"It's to the point where we want to get this thing right for the long haul, and in two weeks, [Puig will] be ready to play," Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com. "Yasiel is disappointed. He thinks he'll be ready in four to five days. That's the tough part. We've seen that Yasiel plays at one speed. There's no real putting a governor on him. It's tough for him to say, 'Back off.' We'll protect him from himself."
The injury initially happened two weeks ago. Despite that, Puig has .279 BA and was still able to get a hit in most games. There’s a chance he could be ready in in 4-5 days, according to MLB.com, but he’ll have extra rest.
"It seems to be lingering, and we want to get rid of it," Mattingly told MLB.com. "We want to eliminate it and move forward. Same with Yasiel. We've messed around enough to say, 'We don't want to play around, play short out of the bullpen and off the bench.'" Andre Ethier will likely see more playing time now with Puig’s injury.
