Zito Announces Retirement Monday

Barry Zito announced his retirement from MLB on Monday after 14 years in the league.

The left-hander had a rollercoaster career and after a World Series trophy, Cy Young award and three All-Star appearances, the 37-year-old decided to put an end to his career. Zito’s last season was filled with a minor league stint before ending it where it started with the Oakland A’s in September with two starts.

"My baseball career has been a mirror to my life off the field, full of euphoric highs and devastating lows," Zito wrote on The Players Tribune. "I've been at the top of a rotation and the 25th man on a roster. I've started Game 1 of a World Series in one year, and I've been left off of a postseason roster in another. I've been labeled as both drastically underpaid and severely overpaid. I've been praised as a savior and deemed a curse."

Zito’s career numbers are a 165-143 record and a 4.04 ERA through 14 seasons. His best seasons were during his first stint with the A’s. He racked up 111 wins before signing seven-year, $126 million deal to join the San Francisco Giants. He was only on the roster for one of the three World Series titles the Giants won while he was on the payroll.
