ANALYSIS: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, or "ASJ" for those averse to keystrokes, was the lone bright spot for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1. At the end of the game, ASJ was second on the team in targets with seven, and put together an incredible 5-110-2 line. He is a fantastic talent who is entering his second year, though his rookie year was marred by general incompetence from Josh McCown and then ended due to injuries to his foot and back. Finally playing at 100%, he showed that he can be a playmaker and is a tough guy to take down (the man is 6'5" and weighs 262).
It is easy to chalk up the performance due to the Titans lackluster defense (despite what the Bucs might have you believe), a lucky bounce, and the absence of stud wide receiver Mike Evans. ASJ has the skills to be a difference maker, and he is a big target out there for Jameis Winston to grow with. Players will all get lucky bounces come their way, but you want the ones who can take advantage of them. As far as Evans' return goes, while he will command his fair share of targets, it also means that defenses will have to account for him and potentially leave ASJ open over the middle against slower LBs or smaller safeties with no help. Week 1 was a parade of amazing performances from tight ends, but don't let ASJ's great game go unnoticed. He could be a solid low-end TE1/high-TE2 type moving forward.
