Trevor Story started to garner some buzz late in 2015 as Jose Reyes struggled to perform in a Rockies’ uniform. Story has yet to hit the majors, but last year his numbers between AA and AAA saw him hit 20 homers and steal 22 bags in 575 plate appearances.
You’re telling me there’s a guy who is a power/speed threat at shortstop who will get to hit in Coors Field when he’s called up? That’ll make one’s ears perk up. Turning 23 this year, he could provide some serious fantasy juice for owners if he plays. His plate discipline does need some refining, as even in the minors he’s striking out roughly one out of every four at bats.
If the Rockies’ hand is forced with Reyes getting deported and they don’t want to bring in another veteran to hold the spot for Story, he could end up breaking camp with the big boys and be thrown into the fire. The way I see it, his worst case scenario is being Josh Rutledge 2.0. Best case is he goes 20/20. He won’t cost you anything more than a late round pick, and if you like upside rather than stability late, here’s a candidate.
