Greg Holland an Option for Rangers Closer?
7 years agoIn an article from Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, it is reported that the Texas Rangers have considered signing free-agent reliever Greg Holland to bolster their bullpen ahead of the 2018 season. The move would make sense, as Texas has yet to name a closer. Currently, incumbent Alex Claudio is expected to start the season in the ninth-inning role, but he would have among the worst job security in baseball. By the end of the spring, however, anyone from Keone Kela to the newly-signed Tim Lincecum could take the job. If Holland were signed, the 32-year-old would likely step in the role immediately after an All-Star 2017 campaign with Colorado in which he racked up 41 saves while putting up a 3.61 ERA and nearly 11 K/9. He may not have been as impressive as his save total would suggest with a 4.05 xFIP, but he also threw most of his innings in Denver's extreme hitter's environment, so there may be less regression than meets the eye. If Holland grabs the Rangers job, he would find himself in the middle tier of closer options. Take this rumor with a grain of salt, but Holland may be worth a speculative pick if he's going for next to nothing in drafts.
