6 years agoNew York Mets pitcher Seth Lugo dominated the best offense in baseball on Sunday night in a spot start, the New York Yankees, and after pitching successfully out of the bullpen all year it’s about time his role is reconsidered. According to manager Mickey Callaway, Lugo is “making a case” for a role in the Mets’ starting rotation. With a 1.77 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 9.26 K/9 on the year, one could say Lugo is doing a lot more than simply making a case. There would also seem to be an obvious solution here. Four of the five Mets starting pitchers (Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz, and Zack Wheeler) have been solid-to-great all year long. That leaves Jason Vargas, who has pitched to a 7.71 ERA across 30 1/3 innings pitched and seven starts. Starting pitching has not been the Mets’ problem this season, but it looks as though there’s a solution to making a strength even stronger smacking them in the face. Of course in that scenario, the already weak Mets bullpen becomes even weaker, as well.--John Smith
