ANALYSIS: New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler had one of his lesser outings in his last start, but it did lead to his first victory since April 29. He and the Mets beat the Nationals on July 14 after he yielded four runs over 7 ⅔ IP. He has now struck out at least seven in five of his last six outings and carries a 3.63 ERA, 3.25 FIP and 3.86 xFIP since mid-May (11 starts).
Wheeler is only 3-6 with a 4.44 ERA this season, and had a 5.21 ERA in 86 1/3 innings last season, but there is reason for optimism with Wheeler. He has struck out 458 batters in 479 innings in his career and had a 3.50 in 285 1/3 innings before he lost the 2015 and 2016 seasons with injury.
The righty is good for a strikeout per inning and he will either get traded to a team with better run support or remain in the weakest division in baseball (though his own team is a big part of that).
