ANALYSIS: Kole Calhoun has long been a reliable defensive fixture in the outfield for the Los Angeles Angels, taking home a Gold Glove award for his fearless exploits in 2015. "The Red Baron" had always been fantastically consistent on the offensive side as well, producing OPS between .725 and .786, HR totals between 17 and 26, and stolen base totals anywhere from 2 to 5 in the four seasons between 2014 and 2017. The former Arizona State Sun Devil had a horrendous start to the 2018 campaign (.556 OPS through 257 first half AB), but finished on an extremely strong note with ten homers and a .231/.331/.423 slash over the final 234 AB. Despite finishing 2018 with a mediocre (putting it kindly) OPS of .652, he was still able to cap the year off with 19 dingers and a career-high six swiped bags in eight attempts.
Calhoun had an excellent 2019 Spring Training run for the Halos (two knocks and a 1.003 OPS in 49 AB) and has gotten off to a much more encouraging start for the regular season this time around with two homers already to boast of. His offense may be streaky and acceptably persistent at it's best, but the well-rounded mixture of power and speed combined with the reliable playing time that his world-class defense allows for makes Kole Calhoun an asset of considerable interest and value in deeper leagues.
