Irv Smith Jr. Flashes Potential In Rout
5 years agoMinnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. caught three of three targets for 60 yards in a dominating Week 3 win over the Oakland Raiders. Smith also had a big play called back due to a penalty in the contest, and it's already crystal clear that the athletic rookie is a far superior receiver to starter Kyle Rudolph. However, the Vikings are heavily emphasizing the running game this season and like to utilize Rudolph as a blocker, which puts a limit on Smith's opportunities. Rudolph has played 100%, 100% and 87% of the offensive snaps this season, while Smith has played in just 49%, 42% and 49% of snaps. Look for Smith to continue to become more integrated with the offense as the season rolls along, and don't be surprised if he becomes a streamable tight end down the road. He's not a recommended play in any formats against the Chicago Bears in Week 4.
