Michael Wacha Building Up To Work As A Starter
4 years agoNew York Mets starting pitcher Michael Wacha is currently building up to work as a regular rotation member. Heading into spring training, Wacha was primarily viewed as a spot starter and long relief option for the Mets. He was in competition with Steven Matz for the fifth rotation spot. However, with the season-ending injury to Noah Syndergaard (elbow), Wacha firmly moves into the Mets rotation. In 2019, in just 126 2/3 innings pitched, Wacha allowed an incredible 26 home runs. This led to an overall record of 6-7, and a mediocre 4.76 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 29 games started for the Cardinals. Despite holding down a rotation spot, Wacha is really only worth a look in very deep leagues as a spot starter option. Of course, if Wacha can get off to a solid start in 2020 and maintain improved velocity he showed during the truncated Grapefruit League season, his value and fantasy outlook may increase.
