Ben Paulsen can come across as “just a guy”, but by virtue of being on the Colorado Rockies he carries more relevance than he would anywhere else. Paulsen annually flirted with 20 home run campaigns in the minors, where he was stuck for several years thanks to a guy named Todd Helton holding down the first base spot for Colorado.
Paulsen swings hard and often, registering a 31.6% hard hit rate but almost matching that with his striking out 26% of the time. The Rockies brought in Mark Reynolds for 2016, as Paulsen struggled against left handed pitching (hitting .235 against them) and Reynolds will alleviate that side of the platoon issue for Colorado.
Paulsen could run with the first base job for 2016 if something happens to Reynolds, but most likely he will be the first baseman on days where the Rockies face right handed pitching. Those sound like a lot of "ifs", but in deeper leagues where you need to rotate in corner infield options, Paulsen's bat can play very well when in favorable conditions.
