Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles made a Week 5 loss in Tampa Bay very close, finishing the game on Sunday with 23 completions on 33 attempts for 303 yards, four touchdowns and a lone interception. While no one is going to say that Bortles lit the world on fire with his performance, the completion percentage creeping up from the fifties is encouraging. His first four games this year saw him complete 55%, 54.5%, 51.5%, and 56% of his passes. For those of you reading that aren't calculators, 23 of 33 comes out to approximately 70%. That is great to see for Jacksonville, and they'll hope he can build on this growth against Houston in Week 6.
This performance wasn't without fleas, as he still was indecisive and absorbed six sacks. The Jaguars will need to continue to grow around Bortles, and the hope is that with Julius Thomas finally healthy, Blake can get comfortable with his weapons and find a sense of poise as his confidence grows. Allen Hurns has come on strong this year and is proving to be a good complement to Allen Robinson. T.J. Yeldon did not have a good rushing day, posting 11 carries for 32 yards. That said, he added five receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown. It was clear that Jacksonville wasn't getting much going by way of run blocking against Tampa Bay, but attacking the coverage was working for them. This is also relevant to Bortles' production, as it should be noted that the gameplan called for a lot of action to go through the passing game.
