Cleveland Browns - NFL Betting Analysis
The Cleveland Browns kick off the season coming off a year in which they posted a regular season record of 8-9. Overall, the team came in 3rd in the AFC North.
This year, Cleveland will be looking for an increase in offensive output, as last year's unit averaged 20.5 points per game, placing them 20th in the NFL. Heading into the game, the Browns will be looking for a big performance against last year's 21st-ranked scoring defense. In 2021-2022, they averaged 18.5 points and 339.33 yards per game against the 10 worst scoring defenses in the league.
Last season, the Cleveland Browns put together one of the top rushing attacks in the NFL, ranking 4th in overall rushing yards. For the season, Cleveland outrushed their opponent in 53.0% of their games.
Getting the start at quarterback for Cleveland is Jacoby Brissett. Brissett is coming off a season in which he played in 11 games for the Dolphins and is heading into his 7th year in the league. Cleveland's leading passer in the 2021-2022 season was Baker Mayfield, who threw for 3,010 yards, good for 24th in the league.
This season, the Browns will look to take the jump into the top 10, as last year's defense finished near the NFL average in points allowed per game at 21.8. The team's defense allowed opposing teams to surpass 21.8 in 7 of last year's games.
Carolina Panthers - NFL Betting Analysis
The Carolina Panthers kick off the season coming off a year in which they posted a regular season record of 5-12. This performance left them in last place in the NFC South.
Last year, points were hard to come by for a Panthers offense ranked just 29th in points per game. This week, Carolina will face off against last year's 13th rated scoring defense. In the 2021-2022 season, they scored an average of 23.2 points per game against teams that finished in the middle third of the league in points allowed.
One area that led to the Carolina Panthers' offensive struggles was their inability to pick up big plays, ranking just 31st in yards per play. For the year, Carolina ended just 7 of their games with a higher yard per play figure than their season average.
Getting the start at quarterback for Carolina is Baker Mayfield. Last season, Mayfield started 14 games for the Browns. This will be his 5th year in the NFL. Carolina's leading passer in the 2021-2022 season was Sam Darnold, who threw for 2,527 yards, good for 28th in the league.
This year, the Panthers will look to have a better defensive unit, as last year's group allowed an average of 23.8 points per game. Last season, opposing teams had no problem scoring efficiently vs Carolina as the defense ranked 23rd in points per play allowed.
Today's NFL Betting Pick - Browns vs. Panthers
Over the last 5 games between the teams, the Panthers have the leg up, going 3-2-0. Combined, the teams have averaged 34.8 points per game in these games. The over-under record in this stretch was 1-4. Last year, the Browns and Panthers did not play each other.
Both Cleveland and Carolina have 2 wins vs the spread over the last 5 games. Offensively, the Panthers have scored an average of 18.6 points per game in their last 5 vs Cleveland. As for the Browns, they have averaged 16.2 points in these same games.
Going back to the 2021-2022 regular season, the Browns put together an ATS record of 7-10. On the road, Cleveland finished with an ATS mark of 4-4. The team's performance vs the spread came as the betting favorite in 10 of their games.
The Carolina Panthers are coming off a season in which they had an ATS record of 5-12. Similar to their overall record Carolina struggled to cover the spread at home, going just 2-6. This performance came while entering a majority of their games as the betting underdog. Overall, Carolina was favored just 7 times.
The Cleveland Browns come into this season off a 2021-2022 campaign in which they finished with an over-under mark of 7-10. When playing on the road, the Browns finished the season averaging 22.3 points per game, right in line with their season average of 20.5. Overall, the team's defense had their problems on the road, where they allowed 26.75 points per game, compared to their overall figure of 21.82.
When looking at their over-under record, Carolina finished with a mark of 8-9. The Panthers accounted for less than half of the overall scoring in the 2021-2022 season at 43.0%. This trend includes games that surpassed the over-under betting line, where the Panthers were responsible for 42.0% of the points.
Recommended ATS Betting Pick: Browns -.5
Recommended OU Betting Pick: Under 42.0
