CBS Sports has just reported that Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger does not have any damage to his ACL, and that he is dealing with an MCL sprain that should sideline him for roughly four to six weeks. Anyone who saw the play that he was injured on are probably reading this with their jaw dropped. If anyone were to take a hit like that to their leg and come out on the other side without a season ending injury...it'd be Big Ben.
However, he is still going to be out for four weeks, and this is only a preliminary report from CBS Sports. According to Dr. David Chao (who does great work, follow him on twitter @ProFootballDoc), a four week timeframe for the MCL typically means a Grade 2 or 3 sprain. He will wear a brace for the rest of the year, but Roethlisberger appears to have eluded the worst case scenario, as if he were shrugging off a 350 pound defensive tackle trying to bring him down.
Pittsburgh will now roll out their potent offense with Michael Vick at the helm. While Vick didn't do anything that jumped off the page, he came on in relief and completed five of six passes for 38 yards. Vick will have a short week of practice before a Thursday Week 4 tilt against the Baltimore Ravens.
10:22 PM UPDATE: Roethlisberger also has a deep bone bruise, which may not abide by any "neat" healing schedule. This could complicate things and push Ben's recovery schedule back a bit.
