Jon Edwards (RP, SD) - 2016 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers

ANALYSIS: Those dashes don’t mean that I’m too lazy to look his ADP up, he straight up doesn’t have one. The last RP listed is the Twins’ Alex Meyer with an ADP of 712, just so you get an idea of how available this guy is.

As you may or may not be aware, the Padres cleaned their bullpen out with trades involving both Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit. Owners might recognize the name Kevin Quackenbush (fantastic name, for the record) who recorded six saves in 2014 for San Diego, and latch onto him as the obvious fill in candidate for the ninth. But Quackenbush really did not have a special 2015 despite him striking out a batter per inning, as his control faltered and his ERA was 4.01.

Now I will say that Quack should probably go ahead of Edwards, but don’t let Edwards slip by in deeper leagues. Coming over from Texas as the PTBNL for Will Venable, he has struggled with command in the minor leagues. That said, he did serve very well as the closer for the Rangers AAA team last year thanks to a significantly cut walk rate. His 2015 minor league numbers looked great, as he struck out 51 in 36.2 IP while only walking 11.

Unfortunately the control issues came back when he hit the majors last year. The key for 2016 will be whether they can correct his mechanics and get some consistent control out of him at a high level. 2015 was encouraging for him, and it was just reported that Edwards and Quackenbush are the front runners for San Diego’s ninth inning. Keep an eye on the situation, but Edwards should at least have an ADP.
