ANALYSIS: There is something poetic about San Diego Padres starting pitcher Jordan Lyles dominating the Rockies, a team that he was absolutely awful on for the better part of four seasons. The 27-year-old had given up just one earned over five innings with six strikeouts against the Cardinals on May 10 -- his first start of ‘18 -- but had only tallied eight whiffs on 81 pitches.
Lyles doubled that with 16 swinging strikes on 85 pitches against the struggling Rockies while averaging 93.6 MPH on his fastball (he averaged 94 MPH in the STL start). He has now allowed just nine earned runs in 32 innings this season (two starts) and, while he has allowed three home runs, he has a very respectable 3.56 K:BB. Lyles is walking a career-low 2.5 batters per nine and striking out a career-high with one batter per inning, posting an 0.91 WHIP in the process.
It is ok to remain skeptical here, but 10-strikeout outings have to be respected no matter the opponent. Lyles is scheduled to face the Nationals in Washington on May 21 and, while this is a tough matchup, one would think that the Rockies were a tough assignment as well and he just carved up Colorado on Tuesday.
