Kelvin Herrera might not be as impressive a setup man as Wade Davis was to Greg Holland, and he won’t rack up strikeouts like Carter Capps or Dellin Betances, but he’s still a very solid middle relief option that warrants ownership in deeper 5x5 leagues.
Obviously the biggest piece is that he would get the ninth should something happen to Davis, but do note that he strikes outs nearly a batter per inning (8.27 K/9 last year) and has a bit of “wild effectiveness” to him (he’s had a BB/9 around 3.30 each of the past three years). Look for Herrera to continue firing up his 98 MPH fastball along with the 89 MPH changeup of his while sprinkling in a slider, and he should be able to hold onto his current trends.
Assuming no real change in who Herrera is, he should be good for around 70 innings with 60 strikeouts, a 3.00 ERA, and a 1.15 WHIP or so. Again, the kicker is that he is the handcuff for the defending champions and he's going undrafted in many leagues (NFBC ADP: 567), so in deeper leagues where it's better to own the next man up, Herrera is one of the better ones.
