In a Sunday Night Football game that had plenty of buzz surrounding Dallas Cowboys' running backs due to the news that Christine Michael would finally be active, it was Lance Dunbar who captured the headlines to open the second half. He was returning the opening kickoff and started to change direction as he shook off a tackle, only to have his left leg bend in very awkward fashion. This sent Dunbar spinning to the ground, he whipped the ball away as he was writhing in agony (he was down first). While not entirely a "non-contact" injury, knees giving like that are usually very bad. He should see an extended absence.
The Cowboys are already dealing with a ton of injuries to key players, notably Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. While the Cowboys do sport a deep backfield, no one can replicate what Dunbar does. Operating mostly as a change of pace back/wide receiver for the Cowboys, they will now have to lean a lot more on guys like Cole Beasley, Brice Butler, and Devin Street. Perhaps they will put more emphasis on two tight end sets with Gavin Escobar mixing in more.
Regardless, this is a pretty significant loss for the Cowboys, who also lost middle linebacker Sean Lee earlier in the game to a concussion. As long as their offensive line is intact they will be competitive, but Dallas can't take much more of this.
