Malik Monk (PG/SG, CHA) - Week 2 Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add In 12-Team Leagues

OWNED IN: 43% of leagues

ANALYSIS: After a dreadful 2017/2018 rookie season, Malik Monk is beginning to make himself invaluable for the Charlotte Hornets. The Kentucky product averaged only 6.7 points per game during his first year, which included contributing only one rebound and 1.4 assists in 13.5 minutes of game action. Monk's 36 percent field goal percentage made it difficult for Head Coach Steve Clifford to find playing time for his explosive, yet inconsistent 11th overall selection in the draft.

Fast forward to Monk's second season in the NBA, and his performances are making it difficult for new Head Coach James Borrego to overlook. Monk has contributed averages of 14.7 points per game while tallying two rebounds, 1.7 assists and three three-pointers per contest in 27.7 minutes of action. The 20-year-old is still somewhat struggling with his field goal percentage, shooting just 41 percent over his first three contests, but his ability to play off the ball and in unison with point guard Kemba Walker has been what is most impressive.

Monk will have to fight for minutes with Jeremy Lamb, who is still listed as the teams starting shooting guard, but the former SEC Player of the Year is quickly cutting into Lamb's playing time. Monk is worth an add in all standard leagues, even if his role peaks as the Hornets Sixth Man. He should be able to sprinkle in some defensive statistics, and his three-point shooting mixed with his propensity for strong scoring games can make him a dangerous piece to have on your team.
