Andres Gimenez Makes Mets Roster
4 years agoNew York Mets shortstop Andres Gimenez, currently ranked 84 on MLB's Top-100 Prospects list and MLB Pipeline's third overall Mets prospect, made the Mets 30-man roster. With Amed Rosario entrenched as the Mets starting shortstop, the defensively sound Gimenez was initially expected to begin the season at Triple-A before the minor league season was canceled. This surprise move now allows Gimenez to spell Rosario at times and to help continue his development in 2020. It should be noted that the Mets top prospect, shortstop Ronny Mauricio, is also getting closer to the majors, which muddles the situation at shortstop in Flushing for 2021 and beyond. In the immediate term Gimenez has appeal as a waiver wire claim in NL-only leagues. Gimenez is defensively superior to Rosario and can help shore up the Mets poor defensive infield. As such, Gimenez serves as insurance in the event Rosario gets injured or if Rosario fails to produce offensively and/or struggles defensively.
