4 years agoNew York Mets infielder Andres Gimenez is now batting .353 over his last six games and has produced an overall .320/.346/.400 line with two stolen bases on the young season. With Robinson Cano (hip) on the IL and Amed Rosario (quad) day-to-day, the door is open for Gimenez to get regular playing time at either second base or shortstop given his production. In addition, beyond his solid start at the plate, Gimenez has looked very impressive defensively for the Mets in the infield. This is something the Mets have been in desperate need of, particularly with groundball pitchers Rick Porcello and Marcus Stroman (leg) in the Mets rotation. Given his performance, it is likely the Mets will continue to utilize Gimenez's bat and glove in the lineup even after Rosario is cleared to return to the lineup at shortstop. This makes Gimenez a solid waiver wire target in mixed and NL leagues in this shortened season. While he may lack in power, his position eligibility (second base, third base and shortstop in some formats), and ability to contribute in the average, runs, and steals categories make him fantasy relevant while Cano works his way back from the IL.
