4 years agoNew York Mets shortstop Andres Gimenez was named to the Mets 2020 60-man player pool on Sunday. Gimenez, who was ranked 84 on MLB's top-100 prospects list earlier this year, had an unremarkable spring before it was suspended. In 14 Grapefruit League games, Gimenez posted a .214/.290/.393 slash line with one home run. With Amed Rosario entrenched as the Mets starting shortstop, the defensively sound Gimenez was expected to begin the season at Triple-A before the minor league season was canceled. Despite his high prospect status, Gimenez's future role with the Mets remains unclear. Although Gimenez is already defensively superior to Rosario, the Mets top prospect, shortstop Ronny Mauricio, is also getting closer to the majors, which muddles the situation at the position for 2021 and beyond. With respect to 2020, with Gimenez now available to the major league club in the player pool, he has some appeal as a late-round pick in NL-only leagues. In the event Rosario gets injured or fails to produce offensively and/or defensively and Jed Lowrie continues to battle injuries, we could see Gimenez in the Mets lineup on a daily basis.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
