2 years agoCarolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said it will be "an open competition" in training camp between quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. Rookie third-rounder Matt Corral is expected to be the third QB in his first NFL season, and he's unlikely to see any time on the field in 2022 if Mayfield and Darnold both stay healthy all season. Neither Mayfield nor Darnold had good seasons last year, but it would be an upset if Mayfield isn't named the starter for Week 1. It's still possible that Darnold could win the job with an impressive training camp, but the Panthers wouldn't have made this move if they didn't view Mayfield as an upgrade. The former first overall pick should have more weapons than he did in Cleveland, but he should still be regarded as a low-end QB2, at best, especially since he still isn't guaranteed to start.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
