Blake Swihart Competing For Second Catcher Role
7 years agoBoston Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart is trying to demonstrate that he is deserving of a roster spot, according to Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com. In the five games he has played, Swihart is 6-for-15 with four doubles and a homer. Swihart is 27 years old and out of options, trying to make the 25-man roster out of camp. If he does not, he will be traded or designated for assignment. Manager Alex Cora was asked if Swihart could pass Sandy Leon on the depth chart at catcher: "Umm... we're comfortable with the two guys we have but we're comfortable with Swihart catching, too. Like I said, versatility it plays at this level. It helps us as far as roster. He looked OK at first base yesterday." Swihart seems like he is marketing himself for potential suitors outside of Boston.
