Blue Jays Call Up Lourdes Gurriel
7 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays are calling up shortstop Lourdes Gurriel from Double-A New Hampshire on Friday. You may recognize the last name -- Lourdes is the younger brother of Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel. Gurriel actually makes for an interesting fantasy prospect at a position many owners could use help at. Through 12 games and 55 plate appearances at Double-A, he’s slashing .347/.382/.510 (.892 OPS) with one home run, a triple, three doubles, six runs scored, 11 RBI and one stolen base. Those are fantastic numbers, but we do recommend a ton of caution here. Gurriel is a third-year player who put up OPS’ of .475 and .657 across Single-A (2016) and Double-A (in 2017), respectively, and his .364 BABIP on the year is well above his career best of .266. He is hitting way more fly balls this year (48.8 percent vs. 39 percent in 2017) and less ground balls (42.6 percent vs. 30.2 percent in 2017), though, so perhaps his attempt at joining the fly-ball revolution is helping his case. Either way, he’s not worth an immediate add in the majority of leagues, but he needs to be monitored.
