Blue Jays Release Ezequiel Carrera
7 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays released outfielder Ezequiel Carrera, a move that shouldn’t be surprising considering he was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo earlier in March. Carrera had been a mainstay coming off of Toronto’s bench since 2015, amassing a .267/.336/.380 (.716 OPS) slash line with 17 home runs, 112 runs scored, 69 RBI and 19 stolen bases across 827 plate appearances. Unfortunately for Carrera, he seems to be the victim of a logjam in the Blue Jays outfield. Kevin Pillar was the only sure outfielder on the roster heading into the winter, but after acquiring Curtis Granderson and Randal Grichuk (with both likely to start), plus the team being high on youngster Teoscar Hernandez, the 30-year-old Carrera lost out in the numbers game. He will likely resurface somewhere in a platoon – he did look good against right-handed pitching last year, slashing .310/.376/.448 against them in 2017.
