Cesar Hernandez Could Bat Leadoff
3 years agoWashington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he'd love for second baseman Cesar Hernandez to be his leadoff hitter this season. It would be a curious placement for the 31-year-old switch-hitter, who had a .308 on-base percentage in 637 plate appearances with the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox in 2021. Hernandez has gotten on base at a .345 slip in his nine seasons in the big leagues, but he hasn't run much since 2018 -- just 11 stolen bases in the last three years. He had a career-high 21 long balls and drove in 62 last year, and a move to the top of the order in front of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Nelson Cruz would certainly be a boost to his modest fantasy appeal.
